Seeds of Our Growth
Realizing that Filipino youth in the US share many common problems and issues, Ugnayan was first formed as a project within the Network in Solidarity with the People of the Philippines (NISPOP) in 2003. In the summer of 2004, the youth collective returned to the Philippines for an exposure trip to immerse with marginalized sectors of the Philippine society – the youth, workers, peasants, and women. The collective experience enabled us to visualize the strategic importance of a grassroots Filipino youth organization in the US as a potent force for change. The initiative to form Ugnayan as an independent youth organization happened on November 30, birthday of Andres Bonifacio, leader of the 1896 Philippine Revolution against Spain. A few months later, with the assistance of NISPOP and Damayan Migrant Workers Association, Ugnayan ng mga Anak ng Bayan was founded as an independent grassroots organization on November 31, 2004 by eight im/migrant and US-born women of Philippine ancestry.
Who can join Ugnayan?
Ugnayan unites immigrant and US-born Filipino youth, especially the most marginalized youth facing multiple forms of oppression, including but not limited to: young women, youth workers, students, out-of-school youth, faith-based youth, professionals, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth, and cultural workers in any place or locality.
